Happy Hollow / San Jose, CA
A bright new outlook
An airy, bright visitor center features parakeet green clad three‐panel Bi‐fold doors topped with light‐filled fixed awnings. The oversized door panels fold back to open the center’s space to the warm California weather. In addition, wood Bi‐fold doors were used in the zoo’s new Education Building. In addition to the Bi‐fold doors with 1/2” ADA sills, both single and double‐panel ADA‐compliant commercial doors were required throughout the zoo’s refurbishment. The required range of window sizes, styles and colors was broad, including fixed windows glazed with bullet resistant glass for the ticket kiosks.
Happy Hollow is registered to be certified as the first LEED® Silver zoo and amusement project in the country, in part due to the clerestory use of windows for lighting, heating and cooling.
Three panel Bi‐fold doors with 4” stiles and a low profile sill create 8 feet of open entry space.
Four different custom clad colors were created to match the project’s vibrant palette. Parakeet, Dewberry, Peppery and Marigold, were used along with Marvin’s standard Dark Bronze clad.
