Kroon Hall / New Haven, CT
A flagship green building to house environmental studies
Kroon Hall, the new home of Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, opened in January 2009. Awarded LEED® Platinum certification, it achieves energy savings from a host of innovative design elements and technical strategies. A key element of the building's eco‐friendly design is its fenestration. All windows are set deep into the walls to provide natural shading in the summer and are positioned to take advantage of solar heat gain in winter. Unlike many public‐use buildings, many windows are operating. A signaling system is used throughout Kroon Hall, with green‐light indicators alerting a go-ahead to open windows at will; amber lights indicate it would be more energy‐efficient to keep windows closed.
