Washington Hall and Lafortune Student Center / University of Notre Dame, Indiana
A blend of form and function for the grand dame of academic institutions

Like so many buildings on the University of Notre Dame campus, Washington Hall, built in 1881, and LaFortune Student Center, built in1883, have great historical significance. With both buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the renovation of the buildings called for windows that were energy efficient and low maintenance, and that would preserve the profiles and unique colors of the original windows.

Marvin was selected because of our custom capabilities, attention to detail and experience replicating wood profiles using extruded aluminum cladding.

Project Highlights

  • This totally custom project involved 310 units, with many Marvin employees working to guide these windows through the process.
  • Marvin created a brand new product using a combination of Single Hungs, Double Hungs, and Magnum Double Hungs, with extruded aluminum clad exteriors finished in custom colors.
  • Custom clad window casings based upon the architect's drawings were created—and factory-applied to save on-site time and labor.
  • Two custom colors, Irish Tan and Irish Bronze were created for the project.
  • Windows utilized a unique 1 1/2" (3.75cm) Simulated Divided Lite bar.
  • The team also created a monumental circular window assembly on Washington Hall.
